Education & Community Engagement

Educational Outreach

At Chamber Music Maryland, we believe in the transformative power of arts education and the importance of nurturing the next generation of artists and musicians. By connecting world-class performers with students in our community, we create opportunities for young musicians to learn, grow, and be inspired. Our educational programs include masterclasses, lecture-demonstrations, and interactive discussions that provide invaluable insight into the artistry and discipline of chamber music. In an era where funding for the arts is dwindling, these efforts are more crucial than ever.

Our Educational Partnerships

Each season, Chamber Music Maryland brings renowned artists into classrooms and concert halls to engage with students through hands-on learning experiences. On average, we reach over 150 students each season through direct educational programs. Recently, we have partnered with:

  • High Schools: Marriotts Ridge High School, Oakland Mills High School, Montgomery Blair High School, Centennial High School, and Howard County High School

  • Higher Education Institutions: Howard Community College, the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County

  • Community Organizations: Howard County Library System, Elkridge Branch

  • Clubs: music club at the Applied Physics Laboratory of Johns Hopkins University

These collaborations have featured inspiring sessions with distinguished artists such as violinist Jennifer Koh, the Ulysses String Quartet, clarinetist Oskar Espina Ruiz, Camerata Nordica Octet, and Spanish Brass quintet, among others. The artists perform for (and sometimes with!) the audience and also take time for questions.

Beyond in-person engagements, we extend our educational mission through free concert broadcasts on WBJC 95.1, which reach over 8,000 listeners across Maryland each broadcast. We also produce a multitude of educational podcasts and artist interviews with WBJC’s Program Director, Jonathan Palevsky, further enriching audiences with behind-the-scenes insights into the world of chamber music.

The Reviews: CMM's Outreach is Top Notch!

"I had an amazing time learning about the new things Jennifer Koh was able to guide me through in my playing! She offered many new insights to the piece that I hadn't thought about previously, and I was also able to incorporate a lot of the advice that she gave to the other students as well."

"I'm certain CMM's efforts are inspiring countless other maturing musicians such as myself.”

"Spanish Brass kept saying how important it was to look up at the conductor at least once a measure. I found that this helped me stay with the band, and I ended up playing better when I did this."
